Dry skin is often confused with dehydrated skin, but they’re not one and the same. In fact, dry skin can be well hydrated and dehydrated skin can still be dry. Although a lack of moisture may make dry skin appear even more flaky, dry skin is due to a lack of sebum in the epidermis (the top layer of your skin) that helps keep it hydrated. Dehydrated skin tends to have thickened stratum corneum (or outer layer) that prevents water from entering your epidermis so it becomes very dry and flaky upon contact with air.
What are the differences?
Dry skin feels tight, flaky and dull. Contrary to popular belief, dry skin is not caused by a lack of moisture. Instead, it's a type of skin rather than a particular condition. Dry skin occurs as a result of the skin not producing enough oil. This makes it more susceptible to irritants such as soaps and detergents, or to the environment (cold weather).
