It’s tempting to succumb to the hype and, I confess, I have to stop myself from investing in a new bevy of baubles, themed tablecloths and nativity tableaus to suit a new theme each year particularly if anything happens to be on sale in the run up to the big day!
So I’m careful about what I buy, particularly in the middle of the hype that is Black Friday. How I can embrace a ‘Natural’ Christmas in my home rather than succumbing to reams of plastic decorations and ‘must have’ promotions.
Before Christianity arrived in Europe, Pagans gave Yuletide gifts in celebration of the Winter Solstice on the 21st December and to mark the return of light after the shortest day. Pagans believe that nature is sacred and that humans, along with trees, plants, stones and everything else that makes up the world are part of the essence of nature and life itself.
And I really love staying with the theme and going ‘natural’. I ALWAYS opt for a real Christmas tree - with roots. The smell, if nothing else, is the essence of the festive season for me. And I like to make natural Christmas decorations and a Christmas wreath from pine cones or bunches of holly.
